UC Varsity Softball travelled to State Ranked Muskegon Oakridge on Monday for a twinbill. Unity was able to split with Oakridge on the day, taking game 1 by a score of 1-0 and then losing in extra innings 6-4 in the nightcap. Game 1 saw some great pitching by two Unity players. Kaylee Vander Veen went 4 scoreless innings allowing only 1 hit and striking out 2. Then Allie Lubben came in to close out the last 3 innings allowing only 2 hits and recording two strikeouts. Although Unity only scored 1 run in game 1, Unity was able to get 11 hits against the Oakridge pitching lead by Freshman Molly Versluis with 3. In game 2, Freshman Mackenzie Cammenga pitched a marvelous game. Unity was up 3-2 going into the top of the 7th, and Oakridge was able to get the only hard hit ball all day against the Unity pitchers and hit a homerun to tie it up. Unity was able to get a runner to 2nd in the bottom of the 7th, but was unable to score. Then Oakridge was able to string together 4 two out singles to take the lead in the top of the 8th.. Unity battled back in the bottom of the 8th, scoring 1 run, but left the tying runs at 2nd & 3rd. Unity will next travel to Fruitport on Tuesday to close outs its conference schedule.
